Nicolas Cage says he likely won't work with Amazon again

At New York Comic Con on Saturday, Nicolas Cage said he didn't sign a waiver that would have let AI be used on "Spider-Noir." He tied that to Amazon's investment in OpenAI, which he put at $50 billion, and said he'll probably skip future work with the studio. Amazon cancelled the series after one season last month, days before the Emmys, where it had 11 nominations. It had also logged 2.6 billion minutes viewed in its first six weeks. Cage said he wants to work with Gen Z directors and let slip that his next TV job may be a season of "True Detective." HBO hasn't commented.

Why it mattersWatch this as a live example of an A-list actor drawing a line on AI, and of a casting scoop that dropped before the studio announced it.

'Other Mommy' tops Friday with $12.6 million; 'Social Reckoning' opens soft

Universal's horror film "Other Mommy" took $12.6 million on Friday from 3,365 theaters, easily winning the day. It's on course for about $28 million over the weekend. Amazon MGM's "Verity" was second with $4 million, and "Resident Evil" was third with $2.32 million. Sony's "The Social Reckoning" landed fourth with $2.15 million from 2,606 theaters and is heading for roughly $6 million. Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to "The Social Network" has had mixed reviews. Horror's strong 2026 run looks set to continue into Halloween.

Why it mattersYou can read this as proof that scary movies are still the safest bet on the calendar, while adult dramas have to fight harder.

U.K. picks Iran documentary 'Rehearsals for a Revolution' for Oscars

The U.K. has chosen Pegah Ahangarani's "Rehearsals for a Revolution" as its entry for best international feature at the 2027 Oscars. The documentary won the L'Oeil d'Or for best documentary at Cannes. It covers more than 40 years of Iranian history through the filmmaker's own experience of exile and her family's stories. Ahangarani made it in the U.K. over more than two and a half years. Sony Pictures Classics will run Oscar-qualifying engagements in New York and Los Angeles in December, then open it on Jan. 8, 2027. The Academy announces its 15-film shortlist on Dec. 15, and nominees follow on Jan. 21.

Why it mattersNote a Cannes winner with a distributor and an awards-season schedule already in place; it's one to track on the shortlist.

'Other Mommy' wins weekend despite D+ CinemaScore and poor reviews

"Other Mommy" is headed for around $28 million, ahead of the studio's $20 million projection for a film with a $19 million budget. The catch is a D+ CinemaScore, the lowest grade since "Megalopolis" in September 2024, plus a 19 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. "The Social Reckoning" opened to $2.1 million on Friday, with about $6 million expected, against the $7 million Sony hoped for. It cost $30 million and holds a 54 percent critics score. Its predecessor opened to $22.4 million in 2010 and made $224 million worldwide. In limited release, "Misty Green" took $27,000 from six theaters.

Why it mattersWeigh the big opening against the audience grade, because the second weekend will show whether word of mouth bites.

AMC's NYCC panel: 'Mayfair Witches' date, plus 'Kill Jackie' and 'Yaga'

AMC used its New York Comic Con panel to set Dec. 30 for the third season of "Mayfair Witches" and to preview two new series. "Kill Jackie" stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as a former drug queenpin hunted by seven assassins. It's based on Nick Harkaway's novel, whose lead was originally a man. "Yaga," led by Carrie-Anne Moss, follows an investigator probing a missing heir in a coastal town, with a witchy twist. "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon" also showed a teaser for its fourth and final season, due in February. No premiere dates were given for "Kill Jackie" or "Yaga."

Why it mattersUse this as a quick look at AMC's genre lineup for the coming months, even though two of the shows still lack dates.

'Verity' and 'Resident Evil' hold; 'The Odyssey' returns to top 10

Deadline's Saturday update puts "Verity" second in its sophomore weekend at an estimated $14.2 million, down 56%, for $56.6 million total. "Resident Evil" is on track for $8.2 million in week four, down 35%. "Heart of the Beast" earned an A- CinemaScore and should reach about $6.9 million. The surprise is "The Odyssey," back in the top 10 in week 18 after regaining 70mm Imax prints. It's expected to make $2 million from 560 locations, nearly 60% more than last weekend, for a $622 million cume. "Other Mommy" skews young, with 18-to-24-year-olds the largest group at 38%.

Why it mattersNotice that premium-format screens can still pull a months-old film back into the conversation.
