Trump announces Russian diesel deal; Zelensky calls it a gift to Putin
Trump said Putin will release 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, 500,000 in November and a million more after that. A further three million tonnes could follow, depending on the state of Russian refineries. The Treasury is suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until 7 April, though frozen assets stay frozen. Zelensky said it funds a war that should be ended, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said it gives Moscow more revenue. Quilter Cheviot's Tim Armitage put the first tranche at about 2.25 million barrels, against US demand of roughly 3.8 million a day. US diesel averages $6.28 a gallon, and Brent is above $103. EU foreign ministers are due to approve their largest Russia sanctions package on Monday.
Why it mattersTreat this as a political signal more than a supply fix, and watch for sanctions divergence between Washington and Europe.
