Valkyries sweep Aces in overtime, reach first WNBA Finals

Golden State finished off Las Vegas with an 87-77 overtime win in Game 3 on Friday. Next up is the Atlanta Dream, with the Finals starting Oct. 17. This team scores like a bad habit and defends like a villain. It had the league's 99.1 defensive rating, more than four points per 100 possessions better than anyone else. Against the Aces, that D held a team that shot 59.3% true in the regular season to 50.8%. Las Vegas went 2 of 16 in a third-quarter stretch as the Valkyries erased an 11-point deficit. Gabby Williams averaged 20.3 points in the series. Owner Joe Lacob promised a title within five years, and he's now four wins from cashing that check.

Why it mattersYou're watching a franchise in its second year win with defense, which is rare and a lot of fun.

Eagles lose Barkley and Smith; Hurts added with calf issue

Philadelphia heads to London to face Jacksonville without running back Saquon Barkley (hamstring) and receivers DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Marquise Brown (ankle). Safety Marcus Epps and lineman Drew Kendall are also out. Barkley got hurt in last week's loss to the Rams. Jalen Hurts popped up on the report with a calf injury, but he was a full participant and is expected to play. Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard is questionable. Linebacker Zack Baun and tight end Dallas Goedert are back and off the report. The Eagles are already struggling, and now Hurts has fewer weapons to throw to. Jacksonville is a 7-point favorite, per CBS.

Why it mattersYou should downgrade every Eagles skill player and keep an eye on Hurts' calf before kickoff.

Ravens without Lamar Jackson; Flowers and Humphrey questionable

Lamar Jackson is out for Sunday night's game in Atlanta, and the rest of the report doesn't help. Receiver Zay Flowers (foot) was limited all week and is questionable. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (hamstring, calf) is also questionable after returning to practice Friday. Guard Andrew Vorhees (foot) is questionable too. Trey Hendrickson (finger) and center Cam Jurgens (concussion) are already ruled out. Coach Jesse Minter says he expects Jurgens to make his Ravens debut in Week 6. Baltimore will wait on Flowers until the last minute.

Why it mattersYou can't set a Ravens lineup, fantasy or otherwise, until Flowers' status is official.

Chargers missing both starting tackles and Derwin James vs. Broncos

Los Angeles is down to emergency mode. Left tackle Rashawn Slater is headed to injured reserve after ankle surgery, and right tackle Joe Alt is out with a neck injury. Safety Derwin James (hamstring) is out too. So are receivers Quentin Johnston and Brenen Thompson, cornerback Donte Jackson, and linemen Kayode Awosika and Trevor Penning. Backup quarterback Trey Lance is doubtful, which leaves DJ Uiagalelei as Justin Herbert's understudy. Ladd McConkey (foot) is questionable. The Chargers are still chasing their first win of the season, and this list makes that harder against Denver.

Why it mattersYou should expect Justin Herbert to have a rough day behind a patchwork line.

Caleb Williams questionable, but Bagent expected to start against Packers

Williams practiced for the first time since hurting his hamstring in Week 2, and he was limited. He's officially questionable for the Packers game. Sources disagree on his outlook: PFT says he's not expected to play, while CBS says he has a chance to return. PFT expects Tyson Bagent to start. A limited practice is a good sign for Week 6 against Atlanta. Running back Kyle Monangai and linebacker Keyshaun Elliott are out. Kyler Gordon, Noah Sewell and Shemar Turner are questionable and in their 21-day return window.

Why it mattersYou should plan on Bagent and treat a Williams return as a bonus.

Mike Ditka, Hall of Fame tight end and Bears Super Bowl coach, dies at 86

Mike Ditka has died at 86, his family announced Friday. He was the first tight end in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Bears retired his No. 89. As a rookie in 1961 he won Rookie of the Year and became the first tight end to top 1,000 receiving yards. He caught a touchdown in Dallas' Super Bowl VI win, then won another ring as a Cowboys assistant. Back in Chicago as coach, he led the 1985 Bears to an 18-1 record and a 46-10 Super Bowl XX win over the Patriots. He coached the Bears for 11 years and became a Windy City icon, even a Saturday Night Live character.

Why it mattersYou're losing a guy who mattered as a player, a coach and a personality.

USC receiver Terrell Anderson headed for season-ending surgery

The Trojans lose their big transfer-portal pickup after just three games. Anderson, ranked the No. 10 transfer by 247Sports, caught only two passes for 50 yards, both against Oregon. He had 39 catches, 629 yards and five touchdowns at NC State last year. He's not the only one: freshman Trent Mosley (knee) missed the last two games, and tight end Mark Bowman missed last week. Both are questionable for Saturday night at Penn State. Zach Williams and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, the team's leading receivers, should see plenty of targets. Sophomore Tanook Hines also made a standout touchdown catch last week.

Why it mattersYou should expect USC's passing game to lean on a thin, banged-up group at Penn State.
